Areas

Categorizing Denver

Dividing Denver into neighborhoods and districts is not an exact science. The city defined official neighborhood boundaries many years ago, but these boundaries and neighborhood names do not reflect the current layout of 21st century Denver. For instance, the area most people refer to today as Uptown is defined by the city as "North Capitol Hill" and "City Park West", and the area we know as "Lower Downtown" is called the "Union Station" neighborhood. These definitions are still used for statistical purposes such as tracking crime and demographics. The Downtown Denver Partnership has defined its own neighborhood boundaries for areas around downtown, which more closely reflect the reality of modern Denver. Additionally, new districts are emerging which overlap other defined neighborhoods. For instance, the Bluebird District sits on the boundary of the traditional City Park and Congress Park neighborhoods.

For the purposes of FunDenver, I believe we should attempt to use contemporary area names which are recognizable by today's residents. For areas around Downtown, the Downtown Denver Partnership's neighborhood definitions should be used first. Historical neighborhood names can be used if they are still in common usage (i.e. Capitol Hill). New, emerging area names can be used as needed, and it's okay if they overlap other areas (i.e. Bluebird District).
