Coffee House Comparisons

In some ways, most coffee houses are very similar. Any coffee house can sell you a low-fat vanilla latte with an extra shot of espresso. However, there are some features in which coffee houses vary widely. I give high props to those which implement a lot of these "optional" features.

These are just a handful of arbitrarily selected features that can be measured objectively. I'm not including more subjective criteria such as "friendly staff" and "great tasting coffee". While these are important, they are a lot harder to make a chart with. :)

I'm filling in this chart from memory, so it may not be 100% correct. If I have anything wrong, drop me a line or edit this page to fix it or add more coffee houses.

Criteria:

  • Food - Sandwiches, at least.
  • Milkshakes - Who doesn't like ice cream?
  • Late-night - Because a coffee shop that's open is always better than one that's closed. Later than 10pm on weeknights, midnight or later on weekends.
  • 24-Hour - When you have miles to go before you sleep.
  • Free internet - Reach out and IM someone.
  • Power strips - Shops that supply electrical outlets above and beyond wall plates. Your gadgets can have some juice while you get a buzz!
